Practical Cases

Critical Infrastructure Protection

Decision makers in Critical Infrastructure Protection need to stay on top of events as they unfold in order to provide rapid assessment and advice concerning actions to be taken. Through the Media Mining System (MMS), analysts can make sense of great amounts of information through a combination of machine computation and human resources. Access below some practical cases.

Earthquake, Peru – May 2019

During natural disasters, social media content works as an ally providing a rich set of information. On May 2019, a magnitude 8 earthquake struck north-central Peru, leading to electricity cut, buildings and bridges to collapse and water supply interruptions. Main roads and health facilities were also damaged. In this example, the most frequent terms mentioned at stories in traditional media, as well as the most frequent hashtags in the context of the earthquake were investigated. Once the terms are identified, the system can be set with different filters to obtain more in depth investigations.

Dam Disaster,
Brazil – January 2019

On January 2019, one dam operated by miner Vale SA – the world’s largest iron ore miner – collapsed in Brumadinho (Brazil), unleashing a wave of mud that bulldozed nearby structures and has likely killed more than 300 people. On the occasion, the MMS was used to gain situational awareness on the incident. As you can see in this example, the visualizations demonstrate an overview of the media coverage related to the topic. Sentiment Analysis of traditional and social media regarding the perceived impact of the disruption and the main related actors can also be seen.

Data Breach, Singapore – January 2019

On January 2019, Singapore faced the data leak of medical records belonged to 5,400 Singaporeans diagnosed with HIV since 1985 up to January 2013 as well as 8,800 foreigners.

As presented in this example, it is possible to make use of the SAIL LABS Media Mining to evaluate the impact of the data breach on the media.
